Pop Culture Homework Assignment: Jane Eyre

After finishing  The Eyre Affair, I realized that I had the 1996 film version of the novel in my netflix queue.  This film stars William Hurt as Rochester and Charlotte Gainsbourg as Jane Eyre.  Gainsbourg does an excellent job of showing Jane’s quiet strength and intelligence.  And, William Hurt does a nice job of being a jerk.  The scenery is beautiful and the sets were nice.  I want to say nice things about this film.  Except, it reminded me of one thing:  that I actually didn’t like reading Jane Eyre.  I thought Rochester was a complete ass and I wanted Jane and use her new found fortune to discover the world.  Instead, she goes back to him and helps him regain his sight and…blah blah blah.  The movie was fine but the story still sucks.

I am amazed at how sometimes, there can be a disconnect between the content and the interpretation of the film. The same thing with Merchant of Venice, when I thought the performance was great, but the story sucked. I do think I remember watching this film a long long time ago, and yes, I never was a fan of gothic romances like this one.

I’m glad it is not just me. I think this is why I like Jane Austen so much, actually. Her books are satirical and funny.
